Holiday Survival Guide
The holidays are such a wonderful, festive time of year but for some it could mean sabotaging all the hard work that happened in the gym through the past year. The vast amount of parties and events to attend can be fun but all the delicious treats may be tempting and it's easy to over indulge.
By using this holiday survival guide you will still be able to enjoy yourself without losing the results you worked so hard to gain.
1) Eat before you go to the party. It is easy to show up at a party and be starving to death only to sit by the buffet table and fill up on potato chips and sweet treats. If you have a healthy snack, or meal, before you arrive you will be less tempted to fill up on foods that are high in fat, sugar, salt and empty calories.
2) Find other activities to do other than eat. Most holiday gatherings revolve around food. Find other activities to do such as going for a walk, tobogganing, skating or playing games with your loved ones. Fill your soul with love rather than food.
3) Limit your alcohol intake. Although it is nice to participate in a little holiday cheer alcohol contains a lot of empty calories and sugar that is quickly stored as fat. Kombucha, a fermented beverage, is a healthier option and still might give you a little buzz.
4) Give a healthy gift. When taking a potluck item to a party bring a dish that won't expand your waistline. That way if there isn't anything else to eat you can eat your food. Why not give a gift of good health? Give your loved ones a gym membership, health snacks or something that will inspire them to gain better health in the new year.
5) Get a head start on your new years resolution. Why wait until the new year to start your new exercise regime. If you have been active all year.. great! Keep up the workouts over the holiday season. You will have more energy and feel much better than if you stop your activity. If you have a plan to get started in the new year... get going now! Why wait?
6) Transform your traditional holiday treats into healthier, yet still tasty, options. Traditional holiday treats are often full of refined sugar, fat and salt. It is easy to make your favourites into healthier options by using coconut oil instead of butter, seas salt instead of table salt and maple syrup or honey instead of white, refined sugar.
