30 days of giving - Day #13: Animals have healing energy

Have you ever had a bad day only to have everything feel better when you are greeted at the door by your dog, snuggled with your cat or went out for a horseback ride? This is because research shows that animals have incredible healing powers.

A study published in The American Journal of Crital Care (July 2008) showed that animals play a

significant role in healing. Animals such as dogs, cats, fish and guinea pigs were used in a hospital setting and the postive results were reported.

The human-animal connection has been shown to have such benefits as:

- Longer survival rates

- Improved hemodynamics in heart failure patients

- Reduced blood pressure

- Reduced neurohormone levels

- Decreased respiratory rate

- Reduced levels of pain

- Stress reduction

- Increased happiness

- Enhanced communication

- Better relationship development

When I first adopted my dog, Pebbles, my friend told me that her dog was her earth angel. I had no

idea how true this was until I had a dog of my own. She is always there when I need her and seems to know exactly how cuddly to be when I am feelign down.

If you have a pet, give them a hug and a kiss today. They are there to help in this life; to guide and heal you and to provide you with companionship.

If you are thinking of adopting a pet make sure you do some research to understand what kind of pet is right for you. Too many animals are abused and abandoned because people have not realized they are more work than expected.

What to consider when adopting an animal:

- Does the animal fit into my lifestyle?

- Do I have time for the animal?

- Does the animal require a lot attention and exercise?

- Does the animal require special grooming?

- Can I afford to have an animal when I consider food, grooming, vet and other unexpected costs?

Remember, animals all have a soul. They have thoughts and feelings and require as love and attention just as much as we do. Choose wisely and they will be your most loyal companion.
